Overview
Born in Nightcaps Robert talks of family, his mother’s vegetable garden and chores, the effects of mining on the town and the reduced number of people living in Nightcaps now. He tells of work and friends in the mining industry where he worked underground for 41 years. He worked at Mt. Linton mines where the workers had to work hard. He helped to set up the Ohai Railway Trust Board and finishes the interview by recalling the building of the Pub in Ohai by the Taylors.

Montague Bolger was born in Christchurch in 1910. Mentions his Irish grandparents meeting on the journey to New Zealand and subsequently having four sons. This is quite a lengthy interview easily divided into three parts, Nightcaps, World War II and Te Anau. Now in his eighties, Alf has good recall of his early years visiting the Te Anau basin in the 1920s as well as those first post-war years when he and Thelma chose to live in what was then still a small settlement. Listening through the interview you will hear descriptive details about some of the long gone people and dwellings that first dotted the water's edge of Lake Te Anau.
